State Rail Authority of N.S.W., Australia

A Live Mentoring Case Study

State Rail "Taking the Trains to the Games"

The Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 was a 'no car' games with the State Rail Authority of N.S.W. providing 24 hour per day rail services for movement of the forecasted 10,200 athletes, 5,100 officials, 15,000 accredited media representatives, 5.5 million ticket holders and thousands of tourists as well as Olympic workers and volunteers. This will necessitate up to 30 trains an hour around the Olympic Park Station loop with each train carrying 1600 people with separate platforms to off-load and pick up passengers to avoid congestion and confusion.

Preparation for providing such a sophisticated system required massive upgrading of the railway infrastructure. The new station at the Olympic site of Homebush is situated 400 metres from the Olympic Stadium with easy access by lifts, stairs, ramps and escalators. Other key stations have also had major renovations so that they too can cope with the expected 1.8 million train passenger trips per day.

Recruitment of train crew, guards and drivers has already commenced in preparation to meet the increase of rail services for the Olympics. Concurrently The Growth Connection was commissioned to provide a long term mentoring program to assist with induction and training of new staff in all areas of State Rail as well as support managers to cope with the added pressure to meet deadlines and achieve goals. It is from this exciting and demanding scenario that the following live case study is taken.

State Rail's CityRail operation is the principal urban public transport provider in Sydney and the surrounding region, delivering suburban, outer suburban and regional train services in the Sydney, Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Illawarra and South Coast area.

CityRail provides around 2,300 services each weekday carrying approximately 900,000 passengers. These services operate between 301 stations over some 2,060 kilometres of track. The CityRail fleet consists of 1,503 carriages. Double deck electric sets service the Sydney metropolitan and outer suburban areas while 30 Endeavour diesel cars provide most services in the non-electrified regional areas of the Hunter Valley, Illawarra-South Coast and Southern Highlands.

The CountryLink operation provides long distance passenger rail services, supported by a bus network to provide transport to over 334 destinations in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Victoria. The CountryLink fleet is made up of XPTs and Xplorers which travel more than 5.4 million kilometres a year.

Throughout these challenges, State Rail continues its strategy of improving quality, safety and finances while focusing on its people.
